a true "page turner"

This review is from: God Must be Sleeping (Kindle Edition)

"It's hard to believe there are people who harbor so much hatred and cruelty for others, especially your own son. It's amazing what this man endured but even more amazing that he turned it around and overcame the odds against him. This is the most inspirational book I've ever read."

It wasn't easy for me to read at first. As I do want to know you more and it gave me amazing motivation to finished your book. Each chapter that I read, I felt so much for you and what you have been through in your past. You have turned those situations and handled it so well. Thank you for sharing this to me and other people on this planet. I hope this story will help and get people to be more aware of what is happening each day, each second to the child who been abused.

I trusted this story will give a lot of courage and good inspiration for those who has read your book, for those who been abused, to live and get more hope.

I do really hope that this book will help to change their life!!

I love you and so proud of you!

PS: I agree about the title of your book as sometimes I think he is sleeping as he gets too tried with helping people all around on this planet. It must be so exhausted to be a GOD. Wish people can be nice and kind to each other more. So the world can become a better place and Beautiful World!! I really mean it :-)"

"You are so inspirational. I am so sorry for what you have been through. But, I have seen you sharing your experiences over the years and want to thank you for doing that and continuing to do that. It really does make a positive impact. It helps to hear your story and to hear the feelings you had as a child, and to relate and know that we are not alone and other people have been through things like this and struggled with the same difficulties and feelings. It really does help that you have shared what you have. And I hope that by being open and sharing these things that the world is slowly becoming more and more educated, so that more kids can be protected and more people can find justice in whatever ways they can."

"A Special Thank You to Gregg Tyler Milligan, Luncheon Keynote Speaker,

As a child service agency, Families First sees first hand the impact one can make in the life of a child if given the opportunity.  Even further, the organization has seen the impact that a child can make as an adult free from abuse and neglect.

Gregg, you are a shining example of what can come of a child if given the tools and love needed to break the cycle.  Congratulations to you for the work you do in your community and abroad, the lives you have touched and the impact you make each and every day.

Families First will continue to do what we do because of wonderful people like you.

With sincere admiration,

The Families First Staff

In the words of Gregg Milligan, "Please remember, the reason we are here is to save one another -- Break the cycle."

I am 38 years old and grew up with an abusive mother with mental problems. Her abuse was only physical but still hurt, even today. I hope you accept my friend request. "Gregg,

I just finished reading God Must Be Sleeping.  Thank God for me being awake watching TV late night, when I was flipping channels and I caught part of the Ricki Lake rebroadcast!

Never in my life have felt compelled to write an email to an author before.  I was so moved by your story that I feel like I know you.  I want to thank you for writing the book.

Of course there is a "my story"....The abuse I suffered was by no means at the level you endured, but all of us share living as 'survivors'.  Our similarities do not end there....we are about the same age (I was born in 1964), had a mental breakdown in college (freshman year for me) and fought my way through it to a successful IT career.

I have spent my life battling my demons and have found happiness...therapy, anti-depressants, etc.   Finally, as I approach 50, I can allow myself to be happy.  Although, it is always attached to the sense that the dire wolf is right outside waiting to collect his due.   Some parts of the damage never go away.

I think you have inspired me to get involved like you have.  I sincerely thank you for that.

Again, Gregg, thank you from the bottom of my heart."

"As I read the book, a gamut of emotion came over me. Gasping, weeping, sighing, empathy, anger and finally Love.  How a small boy so tormented by evil could even survive such things, let alone write about it.

Thank you fine Sir for sharing your truth and raising awareness to abuse.  The elephant in the corner that few want to speak about.

The story left me feeling cleansed and relieved. God knows I cried for you, Pug and myself.  Bless those who helped you get on the right "track".

Finished your book last night.. What a ride. [...]  I may be damaged but my heart is in the right place. I can honestly say "I love you" [...] Emotionally.  Thank you again for your beautiful writings and opening up about the pain that was breaking you apart. God isn't sleeping ~ he brought me to you."

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart Gregg, even though you didn't know it, your strength has gotten me through this time in my life, and led me to my own journey in healing.

Thank You Gregg, and may god bless."

"Hi Gregg,

I was also abused and neglected as a child, after seeing you on the Ricki Lake" show I thought I'd drop you a line.  I had a light bulb moment after reviewing my own experiences, feeling like I just didn't matter.  My light bulb moment came when I realized, that it was my teachers, and other moms in the community that helped me, that cared, it's obvious that we all find, (or they find us), those caring people that help us succeed. a lot of us fall through the gaps, probably because as victims we are so scared we behave ourselves_(too well), letting others think that life is normal from an outward glance, we learn early not to cause trouble.

I'm glad there are more people like me, not cause we've been hurt, but because we have a mutual understanding, I'm feeling more like it's time to stop the why why? and tell my story too.

Thanks for being a role model."

"Hi Gregg,

My name is Karen Gallant Craft.  I am a cousin of Geno Gallant.  I heard your story for the first time on Saturday on vacation from CA.  I met April and she gave me this information for your website.  I felt such loss of words when I heard your story.  I am amazed at the strength and determination that you and April must have had.  I grew up in Adrian too, and as I watched the Oprah show online I saw a lot of familiar places.  I really would like to know more about you and April and hopefully encourage you in future adventures.

Your story has really touched my heart and shows the importance of not ignoring a situation when things just do not look right. Take care and I would really like to keep in touch.

I'm sure you suffered so in what was talked about in the show. You seem so peaceful."

"Dear Gregg,

I am speechless. This is so much more than I expected and so unbelievably kind of you. I will put it on my author site in the next few days and once it is up, send it around for your final approval. I may also, if it is ok with you, take an excerpt or two for use in some of my other marketing materials.

It means the world to me that you took the time to read my book and found something this nice to say. I feel I am so in your debt.

When you stood up so publicly, you inspired me so deeply and I became your fan for life.

It brings me a great deal of comfort now to have your support. It was scary when I first launched StoopvilleFarms to start sharing my story so publicly and this book in some ways is a new layer of that fear, although less 'personal' it is more personal from an emotional truth standpoint than my 'real story' ever could be. I am really glad that for you, I succeeded in my goal of making Elinor someone we each could relate to. I wanted her to be that, in honor of the original Eleanor who was my catalyst to write the book, and for all of the Elinors out here journeying alongside of us. Gives me a renewed sense of hope and purpose at a vital moment.

Thank you does not seem to say enough this morning. Thank you."

"Hi Gregg, We are at our other address for some family stuff....here, the computer has sound. I just watched you on Oprah and it made me cry. Loved seeing your handsome son.  When I was reading "A Beautiful World," of course I knew you had survived it and were able to write about it, and so many years had passed.  But I still wanted to take that little boy to my home, give him chicken soup, a warm bath, a clean bed with a down pillow, then tell him a story."

"Being a survivor myself and working in human trafficking and child advocacy I admire you for coming forward and telling your story. You are a true inspiration to the young men and women that are afraid to tell their story. Looking forward to reading your book.

After reading you post,,,,I must say. Who are we to pick and choose the very ones that are in need of love and compassion? Who are we to place conditions on love and compassion? For when love is given it is to be given freely and unconditionally. Unconditional love is the truest love of all. That Sir, is what you need to always remember. Be who you are, stay true to yourself. The beauty of the human soul is to love multiple times."

"Hi, I just read "The Four Hearts," can't review it in just two words. It was heavy, disturbing and yet hopeful, all at the same time.  I guess it was a prerequisite to your book.  But your book, a story of horrific abuse, was told in story form with conversation which is my favorite writing style as a reader. I think you are a miracle -- to have achieved your success and become a loving person despite your mistreatment by so many."

"Dear Gregg Milligan, as I received your email, I am reading your second book. I am almost at the end, where you talk to the psychologist at the college. You are a wonderful writer. (I wrote a column for a Boston paper for five years in the 1980's).  Yes I was blessed with a sweet Dad who passed away at the age of 97. He never passed by me in the house without giving me an affectionate gesture.  Thanks for your email!

Just finished "God Must Be Sleeping."  It was uplifting despite the bad stuff because of your ultimate success. I liked hearing about your coach and the psychologist (a friend would call them Guardian Angels).  Your first book, "A Beautiful World," was disturbing to say the least. I could hardly get to sleep the night I finished it.  Maybe because I have an 11 year old grandson.  He still takes stuffed animals to bed and he played the Lion in his school's production of "The Wizard of Oz."  That's what 11 year old boys should be doing.

I read your last piece, "Regarding Mother and Father" a couple of times. It was dark.  And so appropriate.

I remember reading Augusten Burrough's book, "A Wolf At The Table."  Sad but beautifully written just like your memoirs.  Cry no more!"

"Dear Gregg Milligan,

I just finished your book, "A Beautiful World....."  I could not put it down. I wanted you to escape.  I wanted your mother in jail.  I was disappointed that you did not provide an Epilogue.  I wanted to know what happened to your siblings, to your mother, to you.  You have obviously become a successful author and I will read your second book on my Kindle.

My dad once  told me that his father used to wake him up hitting him with a strap. My dad vowed he would never harm his children...When I was very young, I guess I was being naughty.  My mother said to my dad, "Paul, will you speak to her!"  My dad looked at me, smiled, and said, "Hi honey."

"Hey Gregg- Just read your Weary Warrior piece! Very well written, but so very sad! I am sorry things did not work out the way you had hoped, it is such a shame what goes on in this world! As I was reading your thoughts- my thought was that if you have even helped ONE person have hope, or cope with their own abuse or even gave them the feeling that they are not alone--your work has been worth it! I KNOW there are many, many people who look up to you (including myself) and KNOW there are many, many lives you have impacted! Hang in there--YOU ARE AWESOME!!!"

Maybe not so much in the foreign countries, but definitely in the U.S. But remember even though you continue to struggle, you are that one shining light. The shining light for others to follow and the impacts you are making around the world will make the light shine brighter until some day they will not be able to ignore that light. Things aren't going to be easy, but you knew that going in, you are an extremely strong person and you are making a difference. No matter how small it may seem, it is still a difference that wouldn't have been made if you were not doing it."

"Hi the great author,

Yes, I have read the body, first submission... Here is my review;

You have described the picture of the scene very well. The story also showed how the body can react and order the other part of the body to be function and response at the same time.

I felt really sad about what happen to you from your own mother, the person who you should feel safe with than other people and thanks for Tina to shown up just in time to save your life.

I am not sure if this sounds ok to you but I wrote it the way I felt.

Sweet dreams you."

"Hi Tyler, yesterday I went to see the new Superman movie. The one line I loved out of it was, when Lois asked Superman what does the 'S' stand for is it superman? He replied no, here on earth the 'S' stands for hope. It made me smile and almost cry because I thought of you, maybe you don't have the outfit but you sure are a hero. . You are the world's hero, not just mine. I picked a foo fighters song to sing last night, its times like these, and then I thought you sang that song. I also bought a cute t-shirt with a cartoon cat looking pretty annoyed saying I'm your superhero. . It's nice to know somebody cares about me, thank you again and Nuffie too.   xxxx."

"I just finished reading God Must Be Sleeping and I have to admit it is the most powerful book I've ever read.  So well written and I was right there with the author, Gregg Milligan.  I cannot believe someone can write like that where he can make even the most terrible moment seem like it has never happened and it is happening at the same time.  I am an English professor and this man is not only one of the most courageous people I have come to learn about, but he is in a writing class all by himself.  Amazing!

You have a talent for reaching inside someone with your words and never letting us go.  Please don't ever stop writing.

A fan for life.  Your book just made my ‘recommended reading list' for my undergrad/grad/and doctoral students."

"As I sat on the plane reading your book, God Must Be Sleeping, I wondered to myself . . .Do you even know how incredible your writing is - far exceeding past the greatest masters of the craft from years ago  - to the point where there is not a written word on this earth that is in the same league as your true gift?

You hold not a skill, nor experience, nor a talent nor craft - you bestow a gift unlike any other with each letter you transcribe and word you create.

I wondered to myself if you even had a tiny inkling, notion or grasp of how grand a gift you have and how spectacular both you and your writing are in this universe, and all of those universes beyond ours.

I hoped with all of my heart that you did . . . and I vowed to tell you so in earnest, hoping some of this truth made it into your heart to stay.

Looking SO forward to Book III!!"

"A Home for All Seasons is the first story that I chose to read by Gregg Milligan.  The reason I chose to read it first was because the name made me curious and I wanted to know more about the story.

The story was quite emotional for me and I found it reflected very well the love between a father and a son.

I am pleased that I picked this story to be my first story by the author.  I really enjoyed reading it!"

"Reading "A White Paper" of the author Gregg Tyler Milligan remains much hopeful in my thoughts. These White Papers are reports the author has written down based on the recent research into abuse. Let's take a closer look at some practical white papers.

- "A White Paper: Child Abuse - Unfortunately, it is about...Who You Know". The research is based on the fact that children are in far more danger of being abuse, kidnapped or killed by their parents than any strangers on the street. A heartbreaking truth but it still exists in a society.

- "A White Paper: No Boundaries When It Comes To Saving Lives". A beautiful message I have learnt from the author, that is we are here to help those who cannot help themselves because we are all "in it" together.

- "A White Paper: The Truth about Child Sexual Abuse". The reality is that child sexual abuse is increasing all over the world and it is never going to be wiped off the face of the earth. When we destroy a child, we destroy our future. Therefore, please save the children by helping prevent abuse from happening; remaining aware and intervene when we see it and ensuring proper treatment for those affected.

- "A White Paper: Where Do We Go After the Storm of Abuse - The Issue of Displacement". Where would be a safe place for a fresh start for the abused, it is still a crapshoot.

In fact, the abused seek shelter facing with the terrible decisions that go along with displacement:

 (1) Remove the child/adult from the abusive environment; which for a child, may be the only world they have ever known

 (2) Hope the gaining home is filled with love and compassion

I end up this writing with A Special Thanks to the honorable author Gregg Tyler Milligan. Your message is immensely inspiring and meaningful everywhere in the world. "It is time for "a revolution from below", which will slowly change the hierarchy of the political system. Even though this is extremely difficult, we must not give up our hopes for a better future and continue to strive"

"I am a Thai and wanted to tell the author, Tyler.  Thank you very much for writing your white paper.  Your words are so helpful because the message in your paper is powerful.  Your message gives the people of Thailand a better way of understanding more how to protect our children and also my family.  You have helped the Thai be more careful and not quiet about how we can help each other.  I want to tell the author thank you for telling the truth about how much we care about each other and our children.  The paper helps us know more about abuse.  I hope you have more chances to share your message all over Thailand and to all of the world.  Thank you."

I must say I just looked at your interview from the Oprah Show in 2010.  And I read an excerpt from your book (which I just purchased J).  I didn't say this during our Skype video call today but I cannot believe how amazing you are to share your story while giving others the strength they need to get through the darkest journey one can ever go through.  I understand we all have strength inside us but what you have done and continue to do is nothing less than a magnificent act of selfless generosity.

Thank you for being you."

"Angles and Kittens" (The meaning of love essay) is one of the heart touching short stories of the author Gregg Tyler Milligan.  I feel deeply sympathy for the loss of your kitten Sambirdio because I have ever got through that pain.  I lost my beloved dog named "Nu" when I had been away from home for a couple of days. Someone stole him and I was in complete shock because it happened so quickly. He was not just a dog...He was my best friend as I was only an eight year-old girl. No one would know how spectacular my best friend was to me and the presence of him being gone will never be fulfilled.

Sambirdio and my "Nu" taught us the meaning of love.

And more importantly, I always find a delicate meaning inside every your short stories. I am thankful to see you on the other side and looking forward to more expressive stories."

"In times of "thorn and briar" -  to quote the best author in the world . . . :):).  remember you ARE the rose and there are others like you.  Your soft sweet petals, strong stem, and hearty leaves inspire kindness and hope from thousands of miles away,  and in people you don't even know, but who know you and your work.  The goodness of your deeds - reflected in their eyes/hearts -  is piled in with the clarity of love from those familiar to you, who will always provide water and sun to support your growth  - and your many blooms that make this world BEAUTIFUL.  Here's to the eternal garden, and its Guardians - for all that is good will endure and prosper - and all that is evil will fall away 'like twisted bits of paper'.   And specifically to and for YOU -  Guardian, Messenger, Rose and eternal Angel - for keeping your promises and lighting the path - and for the graces bestowed by your heart - here's to an infinity of blessings and beyond . . .With Love Always."

"Hi Gregg,

[...] it wasn't until then that I learned of the life that you have lived. I feel that I have to tell you how very sorry I am that you endured the pain that no individual, let alone a child should ever have to feel. The only information that I have learned is from your website and my heart physically ached for you. I also feel that I have to tell you what a strong, amazing, driven, wonderful man that you are. I had no idea of any of this when I met you, the only thing that I did know was that you were a joy to be around and your smile was contagious.  [...].  You have all three things in common, your contagious smile, your laughter, and the purity of truly good heart.  [...] the goodness that I felt from you. I then learned of the cruel part of life that you endured, fought, turned around and overcame. I want you to know that I think that makes you into even a more beautiful person than I already thought you were. You are truly an inspiration to all Gregg, not to mention a hottie too."

"Hello Gregg!

I just wanted to shoot you an email to say thank you again for coming to our potluck and the incredibly generous offer to speak for us!  I also wanted to say it was very nice talking with you and I appreciate all of the great advice you gave me.

The book you gave me (which I thank you again for such a nice gift for all of us), I read cover to cover at the hospital this past week.  You are a very talented writer and I hope I can tell my story as honest and eloquent as you did.  You probably do not realize how much it meant to me to have some encouragement from you and I have already been starting a new journal.

I mostly just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your book.  Although our experiences in life are so different, it is oddly comforting to know there is another person who has gone through so much but is still able to live and love.  When I read your book I don't know how you were able to be so brave to go over the worst details and relive them.  Thank you for making me feel like I can make it out of this too and that I am not damaged for what I've been through.

Ok, I will stop gushing now.  I hope you are well and having a good week.  See you at the benefit, I know it will be here before we know it.

Take care."
